Type II Schools:

Hannah More operates four Type II Schools serving students with a primary disability of either autism or emotional disturbance.  Two are located in Anne Arundel County (Hannah More at Millersville Elementary School, Hannah More at Severn River Middle School, and Hannah More at Severna Park High School, under the direction of Mr. Joseph Dickson) and one in Carroll County (Hannah More at North Carroll High School, under the direction of Ms. Nancy Schmitt).  Enrollment is limited to students residing in the county of the host school.

A Type II School is a cooperative effort between Hannah More and the local school system.  Hannah More provides the administrative leadership, teaching and counseling staff and some related services, including psychiatric consultation.  The local school system provides the building space, some related services and access to building resources such as the media center.  The primary goal of a Type II School is to integrate students into the host (public) school’s instructional program to the greatest extent appropriate.  The Type II Schools are designed to serve those students whose needs exceed the resources of the local school system but do not require the support and resources available in a full time nonpublic school placement.

Students typically begin taking all classes within the self-contained Hannah More classrooms.  As students progress academically and socially, they are mainstreamed into a general education class within the host school that is consistent with their skill set. Typically by the 10th grade, students are “mainstreamed” in 2 - 3 out of 8 classes.  By 11th and 12th grades, students will likely attend 4-6 out of 8 classes with general education students.  Students have access to the full continuum of classes at the host school (i.e. special education through honors).  Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as music, sports and after school groups.  Hannah More staff (teacher assistants) provides support to the students in outside classes.  Support can range from 1:1 assistance in the classroom to daily or weekly teacher check-ins.

The cornerstone of the program is the social skills group, led by a licensed clinician.  Students learn social skills that will enable them to navigate within society and lead to increased adult and peer communication abilities.  An example of skills learned within the group are reading non-verbal cues and working as part of a team to improve overall self-confidence.  Skills learned in the group are reinforced within the classroom.
