Related services are those services that a student with disabilities needs in order to benefit from classroom instruction. Related services available at Hannah More include speech pathology, occupational therapy, counseling, psychological services and medical services for diagnostic and evaluation purposes. Other related services (e.g. physical therapy, Braille, etc.) are provided if required by a student’s IEP.
Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy
Our speech pathologists work with students who require speech/language therapy as part of their IEP. Some of our students participate in pragmatic language group because of social communication issues related to autism spectrum disorders. Other students may have expressive and/or receptive language disabilities, articulation, voice, or fluency disorders. Our staff also teaches the Lindamood Bell Visualizing Verbalizing Program. This program provides students with strategies for increasing expressive language and reading comprehension. Members of our staff are also trained in FastForWord for auditory processing deficits and PROMPT for articulation disorders.
Our occupational therapist works primarily in the classroom to assist students who have sensory integration, fine or gross motor problems. She is able to provide equipment and suggestions so that the student is comfortable, can learn without distraction, and can perform handwriting more efficiently. She may also work on improving visual processing speed, timing and coordination.
Clinical Services
Our Reisterstown campus offers a full range of clinical services. Social workers conduct weekly individual therapy sessions, family therapy if appropriate, expressive therapies, and issue-focused and support groups. We also have a full time psychiatrist on staff.
Clinical therapy groups change from year to year, depending on the needs of the students and may include Creative Arts, Expressive Movement, Pet Therapy, Drum Circles, Cultural Awareness, and social skills groups.
To address any medical concerns that may arise, and to administer student medications, we also provide full-time nursing services.
Clinical services in our Type II Schools include individual and group counseling and social skills groups. Speech therapy is provided at our Anne Arundel County Type II Schools. Psychiatric consultation is part of our program at all of our Type II Schools.
